Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Kindergarten in an inner-city school of about 900 kids. We have a large percentage of Hispanic children, which presents a language barrier at times.
Many of my students come to me, not having learned the skills they need in order to be successful at school.
They come in not knowing their letters or their letter sounds, knowing how to count, and some can't even recognize their name!
Our school is labeled Title I, which means that many of our families are low-income/poverty level. I will have students who don't know exactly where they're going to sleep that night.
Through it all, my students are amazing because even though they have so many things that are going crazy in their life, they still come to school wanting to learn and be successful. They try their hardest to learn and that inspires me to get them the materials that will enable them to reach their full potential.
My Project
I am so excited for this project. Because they are so young, it is very hard for them to stay still. I would love to be able to give them the opportunity to have multiple seating options where they are able to wiggle as they work.
I want to use the wobble chairs and pillows to have alternative seating to the traditional chairs.
I'm asking for portable desks so that if they don't want to work at a table, they are able to find space on the floor or lean against a wall as they work. The pencil boxes will allow them to take their pencils and supplies where ever they choose to sit.
Using these materials will allow my students to work in their best learning environment and I can't wait for my kids to be able to use them!
