This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach a wonderful group of 11th grade students. I have been blessed with the opportunity to loop with my students, and this will be my third year with them. I teach at an alternative school in a high need, urban district. The school opened two years ago, targeting "unsuccessful" students. After two years of attending this school, my students have learned to recognize their own potential, strive to meet high academic expectations, reach out to the community, and aim for college.
Art education is so important to the development of young minds; unfortunately, funding for the arts is diminishing in public schools. My school does not have an art teacher, but I do not want them to miss out creative expression, art appreciation, and fine arts. Art not only allows student to express creativity, it also helps students understand other subjects. Participating in art activities helps children to gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, adapting to and respecting others' ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways. All of these skills will help my students prepare for college. Art is not solely about drawing or painting, it is about preparing young minds for invaluable experiences.
In order to integrate art into the classroom my students and I are in need of art supplies. These supplies will give the students the tools to express their creativity as well as express their individuality. Please help bring art int our classroom!
You will make it possible for my students to discover the wonderful, intriguing world of art. Art is an amazing subject that reinforces other subjects, and your help will make this possible!
