Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is a Title I and many of them are English Language learners. My students enjoy learning while being engaged in my classroom. At times, Economics can be a very daunting subject for most students because they do not find themselves being able to apply what we learn in their own lives. I continue to ensure that all my lessons are relevant to my students and they see the value of learning history. Keeping my classroom rigorous and providing opportunities for students to be engaged with the material is one of my priorities.
My students possess untapped intelligence in myriad skills they have yet to discover.
My Project
I work in small town approx 120 miles east of Los Angeles, called Desert Hot Springs. We are a Title I high school and, as such, financial literacy is not always available to our students. But my students really want to know more about financial literacy when taking Economics during their senior year. Adding Dave Ramsey book, The Total Money Makeover: Classic Edition: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness to my Economics curriculum will allow students to become engaged learners in their own path to financial success. As young students they are able to make a difference in their futures through the learning of financial education and economic growth. I would like to provide them with this supplemental book to help them become financially independent adults.
My job as an educator is to help students become successful, independent young adults who enter the world of college and work with all the tools necessary to live a great life.
I plan to integrate this book into the curriculum for Economics which correlates well with the Social Science Standards I have to cover for the 12th grade. We will have bi-weekly team and class discussions/ socratic seminars where students will have respond to guided questions that were previously provided and elaborate with the topic discussed in our economics lessons.
This project will give students who are living in a high poverty area the opportunity to get financial success tips from world renowned financial advisor Dave Ramsey. The most important benefit after reading this book is that students will feel empowered and equipped to their own financial decision making.
