Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever gone into the yard and picked a fresh, ripe tomato? How different it tastes than one that has sat on the store shelf? This is an experience that most children do not get as well, and is an important thing for our students when teaching them about the importance of appropriate nutrition.
My class is a middle school special needs self-contained classroom.
We spend our entire school day together and spend usually four school years together. We become a family and support structure that many of these students do not have outside our classroom. This allows us to know each other's needs very well. Each of the students has their own unique struggles in life, however, in our classroom they achieve great things. This makes everyday a blessing to each of us.
My Project
With the seeds, plants, tarp and water hose, my students will put together their Freedom garden they have been planning. They will be able to learn how to care for plants, keep track of growth amounts and harvest the food when it is ready. From there, the students will use their harvest to complete recipes. This will help them with measuring, timing, reading, writing, and nutrition.
This project will allow the students to fulfill a project they have wanted to do for a long time.
It will also help students have hands-on activities and something to work on for the school year assisting inclusion students with their general education friends. We would like to set it up, so that this project can continue each year with new projects for each new school year.
