Our room is full of high energy, laughter, and inquisitive voices. On any given day you will find my students scattered throughout the room working and learning together. You will see passionate faces and hand motions as they explain their thinking. You will hear a lot of noise; some in English, some in Spanish. At first glance it may seem chaotic, but if you watch for just a moment longer you will feel the learning surging throughout the room.
My students come to school each day with a thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to improve their lives.
Opportunities to see new places and have intellectual experiences don't happen often for them. We are part of a large urban district full of diversity. Many of my students are living in poverty with a multitude of problems at home. School truly is the great equalizer for them and their only chance for success.
My Project
Picture yourself in your favorite spot, getting wrapped up in a great book. Where are you? At a desk, sitting on an uncomfortable chair? I'm willing to guess that isn't your ideal spot for reading or learning, yet that is where students are expected to think, read, and work every day.
My students need seating options that will promote comfort and learning.
The stability balls and balance stools will improve their core muscles and increase blood flow while working. The cushions and ottoman will allow students to spread around the room and get comfortable while they are working, reading, and writing.
