Our district is nestled in a beautiful, serene village in a rural part of the state. We love where we live, but we don't have state of the art education budgets and we miss out on some of the bigger cultural opportunities that students in more metropolitan areas receive. We want to have the same opportunities to learn about Hispanic and Latino cultures that other areas have. We want to improve our foreign language exposure and embrace diversity!
Many of the students in our world language programs have not had the opportunity to see how useful a second language can be in their lives.
They have limited interaction with languages, other than English, outside of our classroom door. They would greatly benefit from having meaningful, comprehensible and interesting materials in the classroom to inspire their interest in learning Spanish. Ultimately, it is my hope to expand our free voluntary reading (FVR) library to offer more books and magazines on a variety of requested topics and levels.
My Project
Reading is the best way to acquire a second language. I began our classroom library last year and started a free reading program in our Spanish class. This year, I plan to have students read 4 days a week!
While our classroom library is off to a great start, there are still some students who have trouble finding a book that will captivate their attention.
Graphic novels, biographies, non-fiction and even children's books are big requests and I would love to be able to offer more of these options to my students. Please consider donating to create more options for my students!
