My students need 30 copies of "Freak The Mighty" and 1 audio copy of the book because they are reluctant and struggling readers who will instantly become hooked with the help of this phenomenal, high-interest story.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations because they struggle with reading. Philbrick's story will spark their interest and make them LOVE reading and become lifelong readers.
The students who will be reading this book are sixth grade, inner-city students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The students in my Literacy program struggle significantly with reading. They have been hand selected by both teachers and administrators to be in my class because of their significantly low CMT standardized test scores. I am hoping that they can read "Freak the Mighty" because it is a high interest story that they will not find frustrating, but will learn many invaluable life lessons from. Furthermore, my students will gain confidence in themselves as they come to realize that they can enjoy literature and that they can easily comprehend what they are reading! Please help us obtain these books! These students cannot afford much, some are unable to get the basic school supplies like a pen or pencil. Being able to give them a brand new book on the first day of school will be something they will greatly appreciate and always remember. Thank you so much!
I have been teaching Reading and Language Arts for the past nine years. This year, I decided to make a major transformation. I decided to take on the challenge of teaching a Literacy program for our students who struggle significantly with reading comprehension. The students vary in age and grade. For this particular project, I am looking to receive 30 copies of "Freak the Mighty" and 1 audio copy of the book for my sixth grade students. I want them to realize at an early age that reading can be enjoyable and that they can comprehend what they read! The books received will capture my students' attention, making them not want to put their books down. As a result, they will come to appreciate literature. Once this appreciation has been instilled, they will then gain the confidence they need to read even more challenging books. "Freak the Mighty" is like a starting point. It is a high-interest, somewhat challenging book that I know will capture my students' attention, creating the foundation and paving the way for lifelong readers and learners.
My sixth grade students will have an opportunity to see that although Middle School literature can be challenging, it can also be enjoyable and can teach significant life lessons.
My students will develop an appreciation for reading that will stretch beyond the classroom walls. This book will help them gain a greater appreciation for literature and will trigger their interests to want to read more. The more they read, the more improved their vocabularies and comprehension skills will become!
