In a world full of video games, i-pods, texting, tweeting, and blogging, sitting down to read a book has become a past-time of, well, the past. Especially to our younger generation who think that books are just boring pieces of paper bound together and written by a bunch of dead guys. Combine lack of enthusiasm with students from low-income, high-risk families, and you have a perfect opportunity for a whole generation to miss out on the gift of literacy.

"Romeo and Juliet" "The Odyssey" For most students, these words do not get them excited about reading, yet these are some of the texts required for freshman year in this district. But after watching "Freedom Writers" as an introduction to our own expressive writing, the students were more than impressed with what these students were able to achieve. They were not only inspired to tell their own stories (which we do every Friday with Free-write Fridays) but were also dying to read the "Freedom Writers Diary." This was the first time that my students had actually been excited about reading in my class. Because so many of these students could relate to the characters in the movie, they were very eager to read more about their lives and how they overcame the obstacles they faced. Unfortunately, our school library does not carry this book. One copy has been ordered for the library, but imagine how great it would be if we had a class set for the students to read. Not only would we have been able to focus on expressive writing, but we could have done so much by reading the book together.

For this project we need 35 copies of "Freedom Writers Diary" to have as a class set. My students have begged me for this book; I feel in would be a huge injustice to literacy to not provide them with this opportunity.

By donating to this project, you will be helping a large group of high-risk students get excited about reading and inspire them to use literacy and education to overcome whatever obstacles they may face.
