Frankenstein and Friends--Science Fiction Book Clubs
My students need 18 sets of science fiction books to read in reading buddy groups.
Frankenstein and The Time Machine are classic science fiction tales. My students are interested in science fiction, but Mary Shelley might be a bit over their heads. What better way to give them the science fiction bug than to start them off with sci-fi for kids?
My fourth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.
Most of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
My students love reading in book club groups, but they are going through all the books in our classroom library. Our library needs a facelift! My kids would enjoy reading some science fiction books written just for them. The Ricky Ricotta series has robots fighting aliens, and Franny K. Stein is a kid scientist doing dangerous experiments. These sci-fi books are funny, too. Add the graphic novel versions of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and The Time Machine by H.G. Wells, plus some horror, and my fourth graders will be hooked on science fiction in no time. We are asking for copies of numerous titles of kid-oriented science fiction books so my students can read them in their book club groups.
With your generous donation, my students will learn that Frankenstein is not a monster but actually a scientist, and they will travel on a time machine that takes them thousands of years into the future.
They can explore science fiction for kids that adds humor to the story. What a wonderful way to rejuvenate their book clubs. My kids and I thank you!
