Fractured Fairy Tales

My students need a 37 book collection of traditional, multicultural and fractured fairy tales.

  • $555 goal

This project expired on June 16, 2010.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach fifth grade at a high-needs school where a majority of our school receives free or reduced lunch. Many of our students and their families are ELL (English Language Learners). However, the language barrier does not keep my students from loving and enjoying literature.

Unfortunately, this love of literature does not come easily to my students as many of them struggle with several aspects of reading and writing. One way to combat this disadvantage is by creating a literature-rich learning environment. I strive to have books abound in my classroom and keep a text in every child's hand. The problem is that it is difficult to assemble instructional units with enough texts to meet our needs. When we decide to start a new unit, I try to assemble as many books about the topic as possible.

My students have been wanting to write fractured fairy tales but they need more access to examples of such fairy tales and their original counterparts. A fractured fairy tale is one that is told from another point of view. For example, from the point of view of the wolf rather than the 3 little pigs. This is a useful skill in discussing point of view and expanding creativity. in an effort to increase my students' understand of various cultures, I want the fairy tale unit to include fairy tales from other cultures. They need examples of the story Cinderella from Egypt to Mexico and China that will increase their awareness of literature and culture.

With your help, we can have nearly forty new picture books that will increase their understanding of cultural differences and inspire them to pursue their creative-writing talents. Having access to more literature will help my students become better readers and well-rounded students.
