My Students

Every day my students start their day with our morning meeting - a place where we play games, share big news, and get centered for the day. Now that we are unable to be together, our meeting has moved online with each of us recording a short hello for everyone to see. But at least we get to see each other!! The sudden change that has interrupted our learning has been stressful - but we are doing our best to stay smiling!

My Project

We are entering into our third week of distance learning and it’s time to start learning about fractions! This unit is always a tricky one for my third graders, but the hands-on lessons I’ve developed make understanding this concept fun! Unfortunately, the tools my students need to help them gain a concrete understanding of fractions are in my classroom and we don’t know when, if ever this year, we will be returning to our school building. Having the fraction tiles in this project would make our online learning truly click! Through playing with these tiles in a variety of games and activities, my students will learn to compare fractions and to use models to explain their thinking. Without these tiles, fractions are an abstract and difficult concept for third graders to grasp.
