Many Fifth grade students at our school come to school not liking math and I want to change that!
Today's students learn through hands on experiences and being able to share ideas with each other. They are passionate about learning and growing as math students when given the right opportunities. Common Core standards push for students to be able to use and understand visual models. Our students need more hands on materials for that to happen.
My Project
My students need hands on materials to really “see” the math they are being taught. These materials allow students to have that “A-Ha” moment! I'm requesting Hands-on manipulative kits. These STEM materials will be a huge blessing to my classroom.
These hands-on manipulative kits will allow my students to understand why the standard algorithm works and provide a fun experience in the STEM area of learning.
These will be especially beneficial to students that are kinesthetic learners and to underachieving students. Most students in today’s classroom become bored and uninterested when they have nothing to touch when listening. Students brains are wired for technology so when teachers use hands on materials they are providing an engaging way for students to connect to math. I bought one set of these to use as an introduction to students and the students loved seeing the connection but didn’t have enough use of them to really connect the concept. This project will allow students to partner up and really see the connection to multiplying fractions.
