We have a brand new math curriculum and no manipulatives. It would be wonderful to have hands on fraction resources for the students to understand what a fraction is.
I would love magnetic fraction bars and magnetic fraction pieces to help them understand the value of each fraction.
This basic understanding will lay the ground work for them to be able to find equivalent fractions, add them, and subtract them. These resources would help them visualize and manipulate pieces to see how to fit together pieces to make a whole.
My Project
We have started our new Math Unit which is on Fractions. My students are struggling to understand what a fraction is. They are also extremely confused to as what an equivalent fraction is and what parts makes them equal.
With each lesson I am hoping the magnetic fractions help them to visualize the size of the fraction and what makes a whole.
I have asked for bar and circle fractions for the students to see up on the board and so they can manipulate them while they are doing their work. It is so important for them to be able to understand what a fraction is and how to determine what each size is.
