My students need Fraction Pattern Blocks to represent their fractional math knowledge with a model and be able to manipulate their models, in order to deepen their understanding of fractions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math levels the educational gap for many of my students. It doesn't discriminate between the boys or the girls. While most of my class is a struggling reader, math is their chance to shine for some of my students. Even though we struggle in reading, my class loves to explore the relationships and patterns in math and we don't let our reading skills dictate what kind of mathematician we are!
My students come to school with varying levels of math knowledge, so I provide them with differentiated math instruction.
This allows for everyone to succeed and grow no matter what their academic level is. Students that feel successful are more willing to try new things.
My Project
Can you imagine not being able to create equivalent fractions in a common fractional unit! As we were using the tools to create equivalent fractions with a model, my students encountered difficulty. We had NO fourths or twelfths fractional units to manipulate!!! With the addition of fourths and twelfths, my students will be able make a complete set to compare fractions with the denominators of halves, thirds, sixths, and now fourths and twelfths.
Good teaching practice allows students to move from the concrete model to the abstract numerical; that is what these fractional pieces will provide.
They will give my students to opportunity to explore fractional relationships and become solid mathematicians by manipulating and visually seeing those relationships before moving on to the abstract numerical fractions.
