My multi-cultural students walk into our fourth and fifth grade classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Students from all over the city, as well as other countries, join together for another day of learning with each other. We talk, support each other, learn from our mistakes, and compromise to grow into productive citizens.
We are a Compassionate School which means that students not only receive a solid foundation in Common Core subjects but also learn and grow using traits/skills necessary to grow as young leaders and make a difference in the world.
Our school is a Title I school that provides a quality education via traditional and non-traditional pedagogies, to ESL and newcomers, students from highest poverty and varying family structures. My school provides all of our students with free lunch.
My Project
Using fractions is a life skill. Try explaining how fractions work without ever building a picture to represent this concept or having real life experiences using them. My students struggle with fractions! My students have a hard time understanding how to cut up whole parts into fractional parts and solve equations or even how to match pictures of fractions with written fractional words. However, there is a simple way to help them understand the concepts of fractions. Students experiencing hands-on exploration and learning!
My students need fractional tiles and domino games to help them build a fractional picture and to break them apart, find equivalent fractions, and so much more.
