Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach enthusiastic fourth graders at a high poverty school in Arizona. Students from diverse cultural backgrounds enrich our learning environment.
My classroom is a caring community that encourages risk-taking and critical thinking.
Students regularly work together in collaborative learning stations throughout the school day. They learn through inquiry, discussion, and activities aligned and differentiated to their abilities and interests.
I seek to provide funding for resources to support the continued academic and social growth of my fourth graders. My students deserve the best!
My Project
My fourth grade students are studying fractions in math. They would benefit from a more hands-on approach to learning concepts such as equal parts compared to the whole and equivalent fractions.
Integrating art and music will positively impact my students' understanding of fractions.
First, they will create an original pizza recipe using clay and pastels. They will choose several toppings to put on top of slices cut into twelfths. Next, they will put the pizza inside the box and calculate how many toppings represent twelve twelfths or one whole pizza. For instance, some students might have 3/12 of their pizza with olives, 6/12 of their pizza with pepperoni, and 3/12 of their pizza with sausage. They will write equivalent fractions for each of their slices on top of their cardboard box. Last, students will create word problems to represent real world situations involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
This project is easily differentiated for students at all ability levels. Students with special needs will benefit from viewing the fraction flip books as they complete their pizza art sculptures because they will be able to refer to the images when comparing the value of fractions they include on their pizza. This fractions art project will bring real world relevance to my students and will make abstract concepts more concrete.
Finally, I am requesting a variety of musical instruments such as drums, rhythm sticks, and egg shakers. We listen to music daily and have invented our own songs to help with skip counting and multiplication. These instruments will be used to make a steady beat when we skip count as a group and will positively impact student learning by increasing active participation when we count and sing by multiples.
