Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are inquisitive, tactile learners who need many concrete experiences to understand math concepts. In 5th grade math, students deal with many abstract math concepts. My students struggle with learning fractions conceptually. They need concrete manipulatives that they can move around to understand what is happening when you add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

My Project

Many of my students' anxiety levels increase during math when we are dealing with the abstract concepts. I use manipulatives to bring the concept to the concrete level in order to decrease their anxiety. When I use concrete manipulatives the students like to use them and they have said "It's fun!" These especially help the special needs students.

Students will be using the fraction tiles to grasp the concepts of equivalency and fraction size.

First, they will use the tiles to explore which fractions are equivalent. They will be able to actually see how the fractions are related. This is an important skill they will need to master, so they can add and subtract fractions. Next, they will be able to compare tiles to see which unit fractions are greater or less than each other. Without actual fraction pieces to move around to compare, students have a difficult time understanding which fractions are larger or smaller.

Usually students have no problem multiplying fractions using the algorithm, but they have no conceptual understanding of how that works. The multiplying fraction kits will help the students grasp the concept of multiplying fractions. These will help students to visualize what is happening when they are solving word problems.

By 6th grade, all of these fractional concepts need to be solid with students, so they can continue with more complex fractional problems. Fifth grade is when they begin using all four operations with fractions, so they need to start at the concrete level. All of these manipulatives will significantly help students to understand the fractional concepts.
