Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are full of questions. They have not had a lot of experiences outside of our small town, and they are excited to read nonfiction, engage in science videos and experiments, and go on field trips in order to expand their horizons.

My students are hard-working and persistent.

About eighty percent of my students are on the free or reduced-price lunch program at our school and approximately seventy percent are English language learners. Life's stressors and the language barrier are challenges to learning, but I am always impressed by my students' positive attitudes toward school. When someone makes a mistake, a student will pipe up: "That's okay, mistakes are how our brains learn!" We support each other and appreciate each other for the different talents and abilities each brings to the classroom.

My students are an inspiration to me and I hope I can inspire them in turn!

My Project

Understanding fractions is one of the major math goals of third grade. As a teacher, my goal is for students to understand the meaning of the numerator and the denominator, and to be able to compare different fractions. If students develop a solid concept of fractions in third grade, they can tackle adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions in fourth and fifth grades. Fractions are a very visual concept, the perfect opportunity for hands-on learning which engages so many children.

The Pizza Fraction Game and Fraction Dominoes will make understanding fractions fun and motivating for my students!

The Pizza Game relates fractions to something most students have life experience with--sharing a pizza with family and friends. It has multiple different levels, so I can challenge those who are ready to dig deeper and explore adding and subtracting fractions. The Fraction Dominoes game ties fractional pieces to fractional groups, which will give students practice with a concept that can be difficult for third graders. Finally, the fraction tiles will be a great hands-on way to compare the sizes of fractions and find equivalent fractions.

These games and activities will motivate students to keep practicing fraction concepts throughout the year. I hope these activities will give my students a deeper understanding of fractions, to prepare them for the mathematics to come...and to show them how fun and engaging math class can be!
