My Students
My students are from rural Maine. They are a diverse group of kids but all of them share a love of learning. They come from various backgrounds but this doesn't stop them from being curious, eager, and ready to learn. As a school system, the teachers, staff, and community work together with the resources we have to create opportunities that will inspire children to become responsible community members and citizens.
We aim to inspire and motivate through real world connections and project/problem based learning.
We try to teach our children how to have and show a growth mindset when faced with challenges. They learn to face challenges and learn from mistakes, and we work on showing grit when work gets tough.
While our school is very small and rural, we have a very tight-knit community that is very active in the schools and because of that, we offer many opportunities for our students and have rigorous academic expectations, pushing our students to excellence. However, we also strive to help our students become better people through many different community outreach programs and service learning programs, and they learn not only to be wonderful students, but also caring individuals.
My Project
These hands-on fraction manipulatives and games will help my students conceptualize what fractions are and will give them concrete visuals to support their learning. My students always struggle with fractions and they need tools that they can use independently and do in small group to build their confidence and their knowledge. They need hands-on materials to explore and play with and these visuals will help them better understand what a fraction is, the size of different types of fractions, how they compare to other fractions, what happens when you add and subtract like fractions, and will help them visualize when fractions are equivalent.
It is through use of these types of manipulatives that students best understand what fractions are and how they are represented, giving them more confidence and helping bridge the gap between concrete and abstract ideas.Having hands-on materials gives the students more independence and autonomy.
My students need fun and engaging opportunities to practice and use fractions in real life scenarios, and with these manipulatives, students can practice skills independently or in pairs in stations while the teacher does small group instruction. It will also help the students who struggle who need a more concrete visual to help them make sense of what a fraction is and these materials can be used during RTI block to further support instruction.
