Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is located in a mid-size city in Indiana. The school is 90% free and reduced lunch, 60% Hispanic ENL, and 98% minority. The neighborhoods surrounding the school are in poverty, yet my fourth grade students come every day prepared to participate in our positive, hard-working class. Our classroom is based on a collaborative, project-based curriculum, and each of the students leave their fourth grade year with a combination of essential social and academic skills.

Each teacher in our school is allotted a minimal amount of money to use on supplies each year. This money often is used up quickly buying basic supplies that are not provided to us- paper, pencils, markers, rulers, and similar things. In order to create a full and vivid classroom, I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money on classroom books, supplies, decorations, and at times, essentials such as shoes and backpacks that my students are lacking.

My students, despite their overwhelming life obstacles, are determined and hard-working. They deal with being "short-changed" in their lives. I would love to be able to provide these already grateful students with bean bag chairs, for a comfortable, fun classroom library to continue to make their experience at school a positive one, and to help make school one more safe place to which they enjoy coming.

Your help will ensure that my students are coming each day to a positive, comfortable, safe environment very different from the one they must endure when they go home. Make their day complete!
