Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom consists of engaging in active learning opportunities. My students enjoy reading popular fictional stories. Currently, we have a lack of literature in my classroom. Through the use of literature, I would like to increase student academic achievement.
My classroom is comprised of a diverse group of learners including students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and special education learners.
They are passionate learners who are extremely motivated to develop socially and academically. Within my classroom, I want to provide students with literature to further their understanding of complex reading skills. Our school is a Title I school. A Title I school is a school with a high percentage of children from low income families.
My Project
My students need 33 copies of the novel Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O'Dell to develop reading skills such as identifying elements of fiction. The materials I have requested will be used throughout the school year and during future years. I want to provide my students with literature that is enriched with complex words and an intricate plot in addition to other story elements.
It’s extremely vital for each student to have their own copy of this book. Currently, we do not have enough chapter books like Island of the Blue Dolphin to provide students with their own copy. Not having their own copy seriously impedes my students’ academic growth.
Donations to this project will support my students' enthusiasm and eagerness to read.
These simple books will help my students, and many future students to come, grow to become lifelong readers and learners.
