My students are highly motivated and excited as we move toward becoming a "Future Ready" classroom! My students enjoy an active, fun, student-centered place where rigorous learning, critical thinking and risk-taking occur daily. I want to help my students to develop the good study skills, self-respect and responsibility necessary to be successful in life. We engage in collaborative, inquiry-based workshops, centers, projects, and discussions. My students are encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes. We engage in activities that foster respect for each other and highlight the benefits of working together.
We are a proud community of students, educators, and parents who work together to meet the needs of all learners.
Our pre-kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Our rigorous academic program is complemented with a rich cultural arts program, courtesy of the collaborative efforts of the district arts program, the PTA and the Education Foundation.
My Project
My fourth graders are experiencing some dramatic changes as we move toward a "Future Ready" classroom. First, we are moving toward flexible seating. Students will not have an assigned desk! This idea is much like the "Open Work Space" model that modern workplaces have instituted. My students will be allowed to choose where and how they would like to sit so that they can be their most productive. There will be rules, routines, and procedures in place for how to use the Flexible Seating and how to make the best choice for learning and productivity. Students that were prepared for class, and participating in the lesson will get first choice of where to sit and type of seating. I will have traditional seating available for those that need or prefer a desk and chair. Currently, students can choose from a pedal desk, and 9 Hokki Stools. The popularity and effectiveness of these options in class are remarkable. I don’t have enough motivational seating options for everyone, therefore, I am seeking 7 additional Hokki stools. The Hokki stools have proven their value in allowing for productive movement. They are sturdy, effective, and popular seating options for creating a dynamic flexible seating classroom. My fourth graders are the movers and shakers of the future!
