Ms. Shagalski from Denver CO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Fourth Grade Literacy Centers

My students need opportunities to engage in a variety of literacy activities during classroom rotations. These activities can help to support our literacy goals and create valuable learning experiences for each and every student. WE need Scholastic magazines and more.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school located in the Cole neighborhood with 98% of students eligible to receive free or reduced lunch. Our student population is made up of black and Latino students, with 50% of students being English Learners. Our school is a central hub for the neighborhood community; providing gang-reduction programming with Open Door, English classes for parents with Focus Points, cooking classes with NAEP, free legal services, a partnership with the Denver Public Library, parent advocacy groups with Together Colorado, after-school and summer programming with the YMCA.

We are now on the verge of being a green rated school (which means that we are effectively educating students) on the districts School Performance Framework.

During the 2017-2018 school year, our teachers have received weekly professional development, coaching and data team meetings. Each class participates daily in an hour of guided reading with a strong school-wide emphasis on K-3 literacy. This has led to outstanding academic achievement, that has already dwarfed previous years scores. We have also made major improvements in regards to our school culture with the help of our school psychologist and restorative justice coordinator.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are essential for differentiated student learning. Each day, we are involved in reading centers which allow for students to have group learning time with me, as well as independent and partner work. These materials will provide students with hands-on activities that can allow them to dig deeper into their learning and reading goals.

I want to be able to bring the love of literacy to my classroom just as teachers in the past have done for me.

When students are able to engage in meaningful activities, they are much more apt to have a better learning experience.

The book bins that I have requested will allow students to easily access the books that are on their level. Currently, we are unable to have a fully leveled library.

The Scholastic News articles that I have requested are extremely interesting to our 4th graders. They are able to engage in a variety of reading and writing activities with extension activities on the Scholastic website. These have also been incredibly useful for test prep!

Lastly, the 4th grade bundle will be an extremely valuable resource for students to dive deeper into reading activities during independent and partner time.
