Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade at a school in inner-city Los Angeles. My students are brimming with curiosity and work hard to achieve their academic goals.
Our class is part of an Environmental Science Magnet Program that needs updated science materials and curriculum.
My students are passionate about the environment and hope to one day become environmental engineers. This unit will simulate a real-life oil spill and students will work to find creative solutions. It will help augment our Life Science curriculum and prepare them to meet the new national science standards.
My Project
This project will purchase a hands-on unit from Engineering is Elementary (EiE), an engaging curriculum developed by the Museum of Science in Boston, MA. Students will be exposed to a real-life scenario where a large oil spill contaminates a river in the Pacific Northwest.
Students will use their knowledge of complex ecosystems and work in teams to find a process to clean up the contamination.
Using the Engineering Design Process students will test different materials to see which would work best to clean both the river and the air in the surrounding communities. They will also learn how to design a project under budgetary constraints. Finally, they will conduct a full-scale analysis of the environmental impact of their design.
