Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine getting up in the morning filled with excitement to hurry and get ready for the best part of your day. You look forward to being with your second family made up of your teachers and peers. It is a community you have come to rely on to provide not only an education but a place where you have access to a comfortable, safe, structured, environment to grow up. For many of my students this is a reality. My students are a diverse group of learners with the majority coming from low income homes. Our school has a high population of English Language Learners as well.
Students at my school continually amaze me with their perseverance and determination to learn.
They demonstrate incredible strength of character when faced with what seems to me, at times, daunting obstacles in their quest for a better life for themselves and their families through education. I admire my students intellect, enthusiasm, and compassion. I am grateful each day to be able to help them develop into stronger individuals who will lead us into the future.
My Project
Currently we have a very small classroom in a school that was built in 1912. We have well loved desks that have to be at least fifty years old. The desks take up a lot of space and are difficult to arrange in a room that was not designed to maximize modern teaching styles. The tops are scratched and pitted making smooth writing difficult. The paint is chipped, they are wobbly, and impossible to keep clean.
Having tables designed for cooperative learning will help my students work more effectively as a community.
These tables will give my students more room to move in the classroom to collaborate with their peers. This will help provide an environment that will not only enhance vocabulary development and acquisition of the English language for my ELL students but strengthen social/emotional learning in the classroom while affording my students a clean and stable area to work.
