Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We strive to change the definition of community in my classroom every day. The 72 sixth grade students who serve as the founding class of our middle school work in highly structured teams. We engage physical and earth science concepts through design challenges and projects that use soft skills.
Our school is growing from a public 9-12 district designated "small school" to an inclusive 6-12 model.
Our founding 6th grade shares the current site with the high school until facilities are finished in 2013. The students come from elementary schools around the urban district. Our school has a strong practical approach to biology and health curriculum. Our students in 6th grade will learn the process of science through technology and engineering challenges before engaging Earth Science concepts of tectonics and solar energy and fluid dynamics.
My Project
Building a supply of teaching resources and materials for a new curriculum and new middle school is an exciting time for our school. So far in two daily debriefs as a grade level team of teachers we clearly recognize a lack of fluency around number systems and metric scale. The ability to record reliable accurate quantitative observation is such a critical component of a strong science framework. The balances, graduated cylinders, stopwatches, meter sticks, solar kits and other measuring equipment will allow us to explore our world with more precision.
Our school culture includes a very transparent engagement with the social and practical application of science in the community.
The students in the sixth grade have an opportunity to build a strong applied skills and problem solving perspective. Your simple gift of basic classroom tools propels projects like "Greek Games" on to captivate and engage our youngest adolescents.
