Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Being is believing. My school is located within a neighborhood known for its high rate of diabetes, overall poor health, and limited resources to and awareness of healthy lifestyle practices. Due to a variety of environmental conditions, the life expectancy of community members is quite low. Through a well being initiative we will change this outlook. Of our 820 preK-8th grade students, over 95% qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Our limited resources do not allow for supplemental health education.

Our school community needs help in creating positive lifestyle changes. This includes impacting both the physical and mental aspects of the being. Currently, students do not have access to alternative physical activities, only receiving 36 minutes of physical education each week. Students and parents have shown frustration in the lack of resources readily available to them. We will provide a new outlet through the practice of yoga. This will be beneficial to both the physical and mental well being of the school community.

To maximize students' yoga experience during morning yoga sessions, they will need access to yoga mats, blocks, and straps. These resources will be enhanced by literature on yoga practices and theory. These yoga sessions will be open to the school community, strengthening the overall school "spirit." Participants will also benefit from increased strength, flexibility and a soothing, positive outlook on life. In turn, student relationships will be mediated by their new found optimism and overall state of being.

Your gift and passion for life and learning will provide skills and practices that our students will utilize for years to come. Please help us show our students a new path for becoming healthy beings.
