Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.
After school, most either go home to babysit younger siblings or attend after-school care until 5 or 6. For young teens, all of this responsibility at home can result in extra exuberance while at school. Although they sometimes forget to focus on academics, most of our students are aspiring scholars who might very well be the first in their families to attend college!
My Project
My students are 13 and 14 years old. The uncharted waters of adulthood are in front of them, but schools are largely letting them down when it comes to navigating their financial futures.
Being financially literate as teenagers will allow them to avoid the tempests of credit problems, bankruptcies, loan defaults, and a host of other stormy weather.
By arming them with the knowledge of how to budget, pay in cash, and save for large purchases and retirement, we give them the power to sail through bear markets and family emergencies. Using this curriculum from Dave Ramsay, students will be able to batten down the hatches and weather the storms of adulthood. We need all hands on deck—please don't leave them high and dry on their maiden voyage!
