I don't know that 2-3 paragraphs would be enough to describe this group of students. They have been through a lot in their short musical careers. When I came into this class last year, the students were so upset about their previous director leaving that they completely revolted against me. They purposefully were disrespectful and called me names and had no care in the world.
Once they realized that I wanted the best for them and that I truly cared about them, they saw that they had the ability to improve their skills.
This group will bend over backwards for me now and have become better musicians along the way.
My Project
My program is seriously underfunded. I have instruments that are so old they cannot be repaired. I have had to borrow instruments from other schools in my district because I've grown the program so much in two years that I did not have enough physical instruments for all of my students. I wanted to get my 8th grade group a class set of method books. We have NOTHING like that here and by 8th grade, they are advanced players and should be able to play at a much more competitive level.
These books can change the lives of these students because they will increase their level of music literacy and skills to the point of having a successful audition for high school band and then possibly even college.
Middle school band sets the tone for the rest of their music education and they deserve materials to make it a great one.
