Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all currently learning on a sheltered ESL team at my Highschool. They have all been in the U.S. for less than twenty-four months and are currently learning English while also mastering their four core classes and electives.
My team is made up of students who come from fourteen different countries and speak seven different languages.
They are all smart, interested and dedicated learners at various language and skill levels. My students are so kind and appreciative of their opportunities and education here, it is truely heart warming.
My Project
Since most of my students arrived to the U.S. with very little previous education or may have major education gaps, I struggle to teach them the foundational mathematical skills necessary to be successful high school math students. As a secondary education mathematics teacher, I know that integer operations, fractions, money, telling time, and being able to take measurements are not only math skills but also a necessity to daily life.
As English Learners, my students also struggle with the language barrier they are faced with when arriving here.
Therefore, these manipulatives would work wonders in my classroom. These materials would allow my students to have hands-on opportunities like they have never experienced before and allow me to more easily implement the ESL 1 Math curriculum I have worked so hard to create over my last four years instructing my unique cohort of new arrivals.
