My students need 4 sets of highlighters, 1 set of dry erase markers, mechanical and regular pencils, 1 set of Sharpies, a pencil sharpener, plus various other items so they can physically have the equipment necessary for them to become writers. These writing tools will help them each and every day!
"For me, writing is foremost a mode of thinking and, when it works well, an act of discovery."~Joseph Epstein~It is only by writing over and over again that our students can truly understand what this means. In order to do so, they need tools to write with. It is amazing how many do not have them!
My students are from an inner city neighborhood that is economically challenged.
Most of them are reading two to three years below grade level and have been for most of their economic life. They are students with untapped potential and need motivation and inspiration to come up to level. Many of them are from single family homes and have little parental involvement in their academics. We are a Title I school and therefore the students qualify for free lunch. Many of them do not have the necessary supplies for school. This causes confusion and sometimes it causes hesitation or lack of work. Many students are embarrassed about the lack of supplies and would rather not work than explain why they don't have pens, pencils or highlighters.
My Project
With your help, we can alleviate one major obstacle in the lives of our students. We can supply them with the necessary tools they need and make them available in a friendly environment where the students feel free to utilize them. This can be the difference in a students completing assignments or falling farther behind.
The availability of basic supplies in a safe and caring environment helps students to begin to believe that they can do it.
With your help our students will have the most basic supplies in order to gain the most extraordinary experience!
