I teach at a low-income school. So many of my students do not have access to quality literature and picture books in their home. However, I am trying to remedy this through my classroom library and my “Daily 5” Reading Centers/Routines. My students cycle through and have an opportunity every day to "read to self", "read to someone (partner read)", have guided reading instruction with me, "word work practice", and listen to stories on their chrome books from our reading program. As a result, my students are making gains in their reading skills. Also, they are falling in love with books and their transformative power they can provide.
Mason Cooley said it best, “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”I am excited for what the year holds, and hope you can help me on my journey to inspire, engage, and help meet the needs of my 24 readers.
My Project
My current reading totes and book genre sorting baskets have been well loved and used for the last 6 years, and unfortunately are falling apart. Your donation will provide my students with blue tote baskets. This in turn will allow students to be able to grab their individual reading tote and get started reading right away because they have 5-7 books waiting inside (that both intrigue and challenge them). Also, your donation will provide me with book genre sorting baskets for my classroom library. I sort all my books by genre and color code all of my books with dot stickers that correlate with the genre basket they belong in. This helps foster responsibility and organizational skills in regards to putting books back for others to enjoy, and also helps guide students in their book choices based on their genre preferences. Thank you for supporting me and my 24 students as I try to bridge their literacy gaps and foster their love of reading!
