Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
EV School is in Sonoma and serves a community of students who are predominantly English Learners. With nearly 80% of our students designated as socioeconomically disadvantaged, having a variety of books at home to read is a luxury. My 26 second grade students have now learned to decode and read beginning leveled books. They love to choose books that interest them and enthusiastically read daily. My classroom library is a source of books for students to read at school and at home.
My goal is to continue to foster the joy of reading and the love of books by providing additional book series titles the students know and love.
Second grade is a pivotal year for students as they move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Additional book titles of chosen series will help my students form book clubs and become champions of beloved characters and authors.
My Project
My students love to choose books from book series they know. They have their favorite characters and once they are hooked on a series, they want to read every book in the series. Second graders sometimes read several books in a week and it makes me happy to see them so excited about reading. Some of the books they love are: Piggy and Gerald by Mo Williams, the Rainbow Magic Series, Dav Pilkey's Pedro books, Ivy & Bean titles, Stink and Judy Moody books by Megan McDonald, the Commander Toad series and Tales from Deckawoo Drive by Katie DiCamillo. By bringing new titles into the classroom, I plan to help my students begin book clubs where they share there favorite books with their classmates. Adding book boxes to organize the titles will be an added bonus for the classroom.
