Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With 27 five and six year olds in one room, our day is hectic! I do, however, love my job and look forward to coming in each morning. By the end of the year, I hope to not only have my students reading on level, but I hope to foster the love of reading in them that lasts a lifetime.
I teach in a school of over 400 students ranging from grades K-5.
It is a small neighborhood school in a large, urban Western Mass city. My class of 27 students is a very diverse one. Even though my class is composed of different cultures, abilities and languages, each and every one of my students accepts each other and values those differences. Teaching in an inner city school can be a very daunting task. Each and every day it is my job to teach students who do not have much stability at home and go through challenging experiences that I could never imagine facing as a child. Although difficult, I am confident that my students feel safe when they walk into the room, and love coming to school every day.
My Project
With the resources I requested, my students will be able to participate in so many activities. Most importantly, I will be able to use these books during guided reading in order to help my students reading development throughout the year. Not only that, but students will be able to read stories at their level rather than a level that is too hard for them. Through these resources, students will be more skilled at phonics, sight word recognition, basic sentence structure and fluency.
Right now, we do not have leveled book sets in my classroom.
With the donation of these materials, I will better be able to prepare my students for first grade. So much foundation is taught in kindergarten and these resources will aid in that foundation and set students up to be wonderful readers throughout their academic career; not because they have to, but because they will love to do it!
