Fostering Passionate Readers:Creating A Ludic Library
My students need 52 book titles for a ludic reading library that will ignite their passion for reading. A spot that we can enter into a delightful discussion about where a book takes them.
"Reading is not a duty, and has consequently no business to be made disagreeable." Augustine Birrell
My desire is to make reading a lifelong pursuit for my students. In order for this to happen, students need to come to a place in their reading where meaning and pleasure meet.
We are a Title One school filled with bright, vibrant children that need as many reading opportunities as they can get.
A majority of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes with difficult circumstances to overcome. Even with the odds against them, they come to school with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn and please their teachers. I could not imagine teaching any place else.
The term "Ludic" comes from the word "Ludo", which means to play. I would like to create a Ludic Reading Library where our students can learn what it means to be so "into" a book that they cannot put it down. I want them to experience the wonder of other worlds, or come to know a historical figure in such a way that they feel like they are close friends. This type of experience must be supported by a passionate leader along with the student's ability to choose a book that "speaks" to them. A book that calls them to fall into the pages and not come up for air. I want to foster this culture among our students. I believe including high interest, quality literature from all genres is what is needed to cultivate this environment. When paired with an enthusiastic leader, who is passionate about reading, the possibilities are endless. My young readers will learn that there are hundreds of adventures waiting for them inside the pages of a book.
Students can only become better readers by reading books.
They can only become lifelong, passionate readers by learning to see books as grand adventures and sources of incredible knowledge.
Acquiring the books I have asked for is an amazing opportunity to begin this process in my student's lives.
