Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I look around my classroom, I see content standards, science projects, student-created artwork, and 27 wide-eyed, ambitious ten- and eleven-year-old boys and girls ready to attack the school day as the best versions of themselves. Day after day, my kids come to school ready and willing to give their best effort despite any difficult or trying times they are facing.
Given the guidance, resources, and positive reinforcement to succeed, my kids can accomplish greatness both in and out of the classroom.
The differences and talents each student in my fifth-grade inclusion classroom bring to our school community are what makes them stand apart in the most positive way. Their talents are encouraged in a school community that values perseverance, leadership, and community-building.
My Project
My students have 22 various learning styles and therefore need an environment that fosters those styles and encourages them to be creative. In addition to creativity, we focus on critical thinking, collaboration, and community building. Our ideal classroom ditches the desks and sets students at tables. Easy table reconfiguration allows for all students to move chairs in a circle if we are sharing and discussing our social-emotional needs. This builds a sense of community and opens the lines of communication between students.
Flexible seating encourages ownership and choice, while accommodating the diverse physical and intellectual needs of all students.
The inflatable balls will stimulate students who need more movement while seated. The cushion mats, rug, and portable stadium chairs will allow students to work on the floor productively in centers. The seated desks accommodate those students who prefer to work low to the ground, but need flat surfaces to write on. Finally, the 3-tiered storage bins will be used to house student supplies and materials such as folders and notebooks.
