Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been a part of team? My students are collaboratively working to develop and maintain a Science Olympiad team in our building. They are the third generation team that will set the standard for many years of participation.

My students are 8th graders at a neighborhood middle school.

The school serves grades 6-8 with approximately 1150 students. Ninety percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. The students are fun-loving and learn best with hands-on activities. They are aware of global issues and eager to participate in service learning activities. These 8th graders specifically are part of our school's Science Olympiad team. They put in extras hours and work to compete in mini-competitions in every area of science. They are dedicated to bringing our school to the competitive level.

My Project

In order to provide students with the skills and abilities that they will need both for the team and for lifelong learning, we are in need of a fossil specimen set and field guide. This set will allow students to learn how to identify and compare varying fossils. Students will be able to manipulate these specimens instead of viewing pictures of them. The hands-on experience will provide them with a deeper sense of learning that will stay with them much longer than Internet and print resources.

The project benefits are two-fold.

My students will be able to manipulate materials to learn earth science in a way that I am not currently able to achieve. In addition, these materials provide my students a collaborative opportunity to work as a team in a science field. They will work with specimens much the same as scientists to in the field. With hope, they will utilize these skills in the field of science and all other areas of life.
