Formula 1 Racing 2020 : Solar Powered!

My students need 8 race cars to investigate our unit on Renewable Energy and also on Energy Transformations in Physical Science.

My Students

Math can be abstract but when you are calculating the energy of your race car you have a whole new motivation! Kinetic energy derived from solar power is now incorporated into many modern technologies and this project is a fantastic way to learn about it and its potential.

I have observed that learning by doing is the best way to teach any student about Science.

Resources in our community and school district are very limited. Students love an opportunity to experience the real life applications of Science hands on as it makes their learning relevant and memorable.

My Project

The project involves taking the group outside to the parking lot and setting up a track for the solar cars. We will run the car on the track and time it with different amounts of weights strapped to the top. Using our data we will calculate the kinetic energy that each car has as it reaches the finish line. We will observe how adding weight slows the car down. How the friction of the driving surface affects the speed. We will observe how solar energy from the sun creates energy in the same way that a battery does. We will study potential energy within traditional batteries and compare this to energy created using silicon based solar panels. At the recent New York Auto Show there were solar charging stations on display for the new generation of electric cars. We will study the environmental impact of changing over to solar energy as the country tries to move away from fossil fuel power and towards renewable energy sources.

At the end of last year the freshmen wrote essays in language arts describing the best thing about our school.

The teacher was kind enough to tell me that my science class was the most commonly cited topic in these essays. I want to make learning meaningful and fun, but with a small department budget that is very tough. I would be so grateful for your help to keep on making a difference!
