My Students

Fractions can be very confusing to students. These materials will help students represent fractions without just looking at numbers on paper. Using concrete objects will increase the students' understanding of the foundations of fractions.

We are a small growing suburban district.

Our students come from varying areas of the community, so their home lives differ greatly from one another depending on the neighborhood in which they live. Many of the students participate in lots of extracurricular activities and play on competitive sports teams in the nearby big city. However, several of them also spend their evenings and weekends alone because of working parents.

My Project

All of these aspects contribute to extreme differences in academic abilities. This makes our time at school so important. We've worked out a routine for our math time that tries to assist everyone at their level. Students move between stations as they feel ready to move on to the next math concept. With these fraction equivalency cubes, base ten blocks, and two-color counters, the students can work with them at various stations as they begin to identify, add, subtract, compare, and order fractions, decimals, and percentages.

By donating the money for me to purchase these fraction manipulatives, you are helping to build a solid foundation in fourth grade students that will help them in all future mathematics and life.
