Forensic Science Clue Board Game Challenge

Help me give my students insight into deductive reasoning using the game "Clue". The entertainment themed games, such as "Game or Thrones" and "Star Wars," will pique the students interest in enhancing their critical thinking skills in forensic science.

My Students

My forensic science students love to explore and discover the nature of crime and justice in new and interesting ways. This class is extremely rewarding and enjoyable because the students are truly engaged in a unique and interesting field of science. We examine topics such as fingerprints, DNA evidence, counterfeiting, forgery, forensic anthropology, blood splatter, serial killers, and crime scene investigations to name a few.

We study how throughout human history conflict, psychosis, greed, and racism have created systems of justice.

However, my students work through problems in the classroom laboratory on a daily basis to understand how real world law enforcement, forensic scientists, and the courts function. We review current events and (Chicago) area specific forensic science and law cases. We utilize criminal case files and studies to reinforce literacy skills and improve deductive reasoning. Videos and crime based documentaries are helpful in exploring real world events. We get the most out of hands on "who done it?" type activities: fingerprint dusting, blood stain florescence, handwriting analysis, hair and fiber analysis., and mock crime scene investigations.

Many of my students go on to careers in forensics. We complete a project in the beginning of the year on forensics careers.

My Project

These board games will allow students to explore the full range of crime scene analysis, deductive reasoning, and solving crime in a virtual world, on the board game rather than reading case files or analyzing documentary films. I believe that students will even find the experience more interesting and engaging than similar online laboratory exercises. Forensic Science is an elective interdisciplinary course students take during their junior or senior year. Since several students a year are deciding to make forensic science, law enforcement, or criminal law a career we focus on the core content of forensics for most of the year. Deductive reasoning is covered in the introduction to the class, but I would like to continue to engage the students in these skills throughout the year.

Utilizing entertainment themes such as "Game of Thrones" or "Star Wars" will engage students to recall deductive reasoning skills they learned at the beginning of the school year.

By exploring gathering evidence and using the processes of elimination the game playing lessons will reinforce the critical thinking.skills of reasoning which will prepare them for college and their careers. I will further be engaging the students by creating an inquiry based lesson to go along with playing the game in the classroom lab.
