Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My High School is located in a low socioeconomic area outside Washington DC. About 70 percent of my students are from a Latino background. Over half our students are ELL (English language learners), many speak very limited English.
Many students come from low-income or struggling families.
Seventy percent of the student population is on Free and Reduced Lunch. Many students and families do not have money to purchase basic school supplies, let alone supplies for extra-curriculars, and the school does not have the budget to provide these supplies for them.
Our students work very hard to learn the language, do well in school and participate in extracurriculars, all while dealing with very tough home lives. This does not much time to go out with friends or just be a kid.
My Project
My student athletes are all beginner golfers trying to learn a new sport. Unfortunately they are not financially able to purchase new quality golf clubs they must use old donated golf clubs and bags. Several students have had their games interrupted due to malfunctioning equipment.
A new set of golf clubs will enable the students to perform their best on the golf course, and not be at a disadvantage due to faulty equipment.
These supplies will also make the athletes feel more confident about themselves, as they will fit in on the golf course with more up to date equipment.
