Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For most of my students this is their first classroom experience, I teach Kindergarten at Martin Luther King Jr, School of the Arts. My students come from low income homes, some having never read a book, others speaking no English, all receiving free and reduced lunches. They are excited to learn and eager to show what they know! Our school is a year 3 Turnaround Arts school, using arts education and integration as a strategic tool to create successes, improve academics, and decrease disciplinary problems. Last year, thanks to generous donors, I converted my room to flexible seating and LOVE it!
My Project
The classroom storage unit will allow my students to access materials and manipulatives with organized ease! My students will be able to see what they need through clear bins and independently get what they need.
The forward facing bookshelves will invite them to curl up with a good book in our classroom library.
Currently my books are in bins, requiring students to dig through them to find what they would like. These shelves would show the cover of multiple books and peak my students' curiosity.
The picnic table would be a new addition to our flexible seating choices, while serving a dual purpose of housing our sensory bins and kinetic sand.
