Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach inner city and international students in southwest Houston. Many of these students are considered to be living at the poverty level. I've taught international refugee students for 3 years now, and there is a huge gap in the education for these students because of the language barrier, among other limitations.
My students attend a Title I school in a great school district in southwest Houston.
Many of the students have grown up in the area but the majority of students come from different countries and are still adjusting to life in the U.S. These international students are full of potential for learning and absorb new information like sponges. However they are significantly behind academically due to their transition. It is my desire to help close that gap,
My Project
With the help of these basic school supplies, I will be able to spend more money on books, clothes, and additional supplies for these children throughout the year. Many of the students walk in the door without so much as a backpack, so these supplies will help me to get a head start on the school year. I will be able to provide for those who lack what they need to begin a successful school year.
The supplies I have requested are primarily based on the things that are listed in my district's supply list for each child. These things include glue, scissors, folders, notebooks, as well as art supplies, pencils, and erasers. I also included a few classroom supplies such as pens and dry erase materials for the class to share. These things put a huge dent in my personal budget each year and I would greatly appreciate your help.
It is important that my students feel that school is a safe place and that they can be taken care of in all aspects.
Knowing that they are provided with everything they need is a great start.
