My Project

Our district motto this year is ‘Back to the Future’. The school I teach at has chosen the motto ‘Back to Basics’. Part of going forward is making sure kids have and know the basics. As part of this, our principal has brought back DEAR! (Drop Everything And Read)!

Even though I am a math teacher, I love getting in a student desk and reading with homeroom.

The problem is 6 years ago I gave my classroom library to a first-year ELA teacher (because I was teaching high school algebra and geometry and we didn’t have homerooms). But my love of middle school beckoned me back. I have some books from our library, but because those books are old classroom sets EVERY classroom has them.

I need to bring new titles into my classroom because I teach at a school that has predominantly students of color and I want books with people of color as the main characters. This is why I picked the books on the list and picked the store that I did.
