My students live in La Habra, California, and most come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They have a strong desire to learn and explore. We are a Title I school and many of my students' families do not have the financial resources to provide them with the tools they need in and out of the classroom. My goal is to provide my students with a well-rounded education. In doing this, I believe that they need to be exposed to all forms of literature, big and small.
Not all kids love to read on their own but most love to be read to at any age. Read alouds are a terrific way to spark interest in reading. Unfortunately, this practice stops in the lower elementary grades. Diving into a good book inspires students to think, create, and learn. Finding a great read aloud is the first step to teaching students so many wonderful things. Read alouds teach us about empathy, compassion, and are perfect for entertainment!
My goal for this project is to use these books to start conversations that go along with our school's Character Education curriculum.
My hope is to also strengthen our classroom community through these discussions. A read aloud and the discussion that goes with it will only take about 20 minutes but may have a lasting lifetime effect.
