This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students from Hartford, Connecticut are bright, curious and eager to learn! They love to show off how much growth they make and yearn for more! My wish for them is that they are instilled with a LOVE for READING!
Many kids come to school and state they do not read each night, as we require.
This is either because they do not have books at home or they just don’t want to read. This saddens me immensely!
Our school is located in the city of Hartford, a city in which I was born and raised. Many students live in a poverty and receive free breakfast and lunch.
A major part of our school curriculum is Guided Reading. Through this portion of our day students are taught to read based on pinpointing and practicing the skills they need to continue to increase their reading level. THIS will help to instill this love of reading that I spoke of above.
To have a leveled library of books that will allow me to teach my students the reading skills they need, would help them to read on grade level.
My Project
My students will enjoy reading “just right” books that are on their independent reading levels. Once they have mastered their present level-they will move up to the next level! So Exciting!!
Students who don’t have books at home can also borrow those “just right” books and practice at home.
They will be so proud of themselves and this will build great confidence in themselves as readers.
With this amazing collection of leveled books from Kindergarten to Third grade, I can meet so many of my students needs. The variety of fiction and non-fiction books will also increase students’ background knowledge.
