Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face many obstacles such as language, poverty, lack of exposure to their community, as well as Aspergers Syndrome. Some have never been exposed to literature. Yet others are very able to read but lack the ability to comprehend or think more critically. Writing is a new experience.

My class is a mini-CTT model which consists of 8 general education students and 4 children on the Autism Spectrum.

We are in the heart of the city in an area that is very culturally diverse. Many of the children live in homes where English is not the primary language. Our school is an elementary school grades Pre-K through 5th grade, with a large Special Education population. I have found that when challenged with high expectations, the children get excited to learn and meet those expectations. This creates an atmosphere of fun and produces a love for reading.

My Project

I am requesting 13 books that focus on social skills, feelings and emotions, and high interest for young children. Some are poetry books; others offer repetitive text. I have also included materials that will help the children learn to read and then extend their skills to writing stories and understanding words and sentences. These materials include journals, blank books, pointers, and reading strips. Once the children learn to read simple text, they can begin expressing themselves and write their own stories. I plan to have publishing celebrations as the children begin to put their thoughts down on paper. I also plan to focus on comprehension skills and vocabulary.

My project is very practical and can be used year after year in my classroom.

I need to reach young children with a variety of life experiences and some challenges that require me to make learning fun, exciting, and very rewarding. Through your generosity, I know I can achieve success and allow my students to carry this love of reading and this ability to express themselves on to the upper grades as they grow.
