Help me give my students more books to add to our classroom library, so they can continue to cultivate their love of reading in the classroom and at home.
My students from Cleveland, Ohio are very excited about reading in 2nd grade. They love to use our classroom library and read books throughout the day. They enjoy sitting on the "special seats" in our classroom, like the bean bag chair or the stool to sit and read. Sometimes they just like to lay on the carpet and become engrossed in a book.
Some of my students have even started their own "book club" and read books together during indoor recess time.
Many do not have books at home and ask to bring our classroom library books home with them to read at night. We do not have a library at our charter school, so the only access some of my students have to books is in my classroom. Many of my students are from single parent families who are working many hours and do not have time to visit the local library to check out books. More than 3/4 of my students are on the free and reduced lunch program at school. They live in an economically disadvantaged area of Cleveland.
My Project
These books will enhance our classroom by allowing students to have more choices when they are doing independent reading. In 2nd grade, many are still learning how to read and what better way to do that than to read as much as possible. They enjoy listening to me read to them while they sit on the carpet, and they enjoy reading independently on the "special seats" in our classroom.
A love for reading is something that a child will have with them for the rest of their lives and will help them to become life-long learners.
For many, our classroom library is the only access they have to books. I want to give them as much variety and as many choices as possible so all students have the opportunity to fall in love with reading.
