Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are part of an amazing program that teaches them to be leaders latter in life. Our students are carrying these lessons over into all aspects of their life as they strive for success. Our students have been recognized as a state and national school or character. This is more than just a banner in our school, it is an attitude that we carry into everything we do. Our students are loving, kind, and caring. I feel like our fifth graders take on their role of being the oldest with such pride and feel a true sense of responsibility to the younger students at our school.
I love how my group of students this year are eager to find new ways to lead our school.
They are innovative, driven, and responsible. When you walk into our building at the beginning of the day you will be greeted by our 5th grade student leaders. At lunch our 5th grade students clean their area of the cafeteria when they are done eating, and help the first grade students through the lunch line. These are just a few of the jobs our students apply for and do with pride.
My Project
My students are part of an amazing school that is growing well rounded young leaders. One of our schools wildly important goals is to grow each student's reading level by at least one year. So far this year many students have surpassed this goal thanks to our very targeted guided reading program. This program is a literature circle approach that puts popular novels in the hands of young readers and allows them to read and discuss these books. This year our literature circles have encouraged some students to go from the required 20 minutes of reading each night to desiring to read an hour or longer. We are elated and test results are supporting this new found love for books. That being said we now have a happy problem, we do not have enough high quality higher level books in our book room to support our above grade level readers. We have tried purchasing what we can, but with the astounding growth we are seeing we cannot keep this up. We would love for you to consider funding our young leaders who are now avid readers.
