My Students

I have a very diverse group of students with many needs. We are a Title I school, and we have limited resources. My students work hard, and, yet, some still struggle with basic reading skills. They are a kind-hearted group who are helpful to each other and want to learn! Many strive to be better readers. I attended a workshop on reading intervention and all the research shows is that they need to read much more than they already do. So it is up to me to provide the opportunity during the day for independent reading time with books they choose.

I would love for them to have comfortable places to sit and read so they may become lost in a book!

My Project

My students love independent reading time and like to lay on the floor and get comfortable. I only have 1 bean bag chair and they have to take turns sitting in a comfortable place to read. As I write this, 15 students are sitting on the floor rather than their desks. I would love to provide more comfortable seating so that students can curl up and enjoy their books during independent reading time. I would love more than 4 chairs but 4 chairs would get me started!

Independent reading time is one of the most significant reading interventions I can provide for my striving readers.

I chose the Big Joe Bean Bag Chairs because they come pre-filled and some of my colleagues have them and love them. They have comfortable reading corners set up and the kids will choose these comfortable spaces more often than sitting in their desk.
